And in the Gym, They Are Heroes

September 15, 2010

Over my first couple of weeks of observing a grade 9 gym class, I have come to notice how important gym class is. And I am not talking about how it helps promote a healthy lifestyle, or the movement patterns, or anything out of the phys ed curriculum. What I have come to notice is how in any given phys ed class, any given student can come up with a miraculous play. Whether its the most athletic student, the wannabe most athletic student, or the student with no athletic ability at all. And when it happens, the confidence boost that comes along with it, especially to the less athletic kids, is absolutely immense. These plays are important to the students. They hold on to them. They talk about them. They try to  repeat them, even though most of them happen out of pure chance.

I don’t care if phys ed is about being healthy. I see it as a chance to rise up, and be the sports hero that everyone talks about.

So get out there and play some dodge ball, and make the most intense dodge that anyone has ever seen.

Still in One Piece

September 2, 2010

Well, I have appeared to survive my first three days of teaching. I’ve made it through still in one piece, and I’m probably even more excited now than I was before I started. I know it’s still early, and I am only teaching one class at the moment, but I don’t have a complaint in the world. The staff at the school is super nice, plus the students seem to be warming up to me. Maybe it’s because I don’t look like the scared intern anymore. I’m starting to really get the sense that this is the job for me. I cannot think of any other profession that would make me feel thins happy. I know it’s early into my internship, and I’m only 22, but I can foresee myself being Mr. Campbell for a long time to come.

Time to Step Up

August 30, 2010

Well, the first day of teaching for my internship is fast approaching. It is a mere 15 hours away. And after four days of prepping, being enlightened, and playing the odd game of mah-jong, I believe I am ready to rock and roll.

The thing is the students were actually supposed to be in today, but due to the major renovation the school is undertaking, (leading to an absence of water in the building) the students will all be here tomorrow. Bright eyed and bushytailed I hope. The extra day has been really beneficial to me, to be honest I don’t think I was mentally prepared to start today, but a full day of looking over my notes, and getting all the loose ends tied together has helped me out tenfold. I am so ready to get up in front of that class and blow some minds.

So I guess I’ll have to wait and see what tomorrow brings. I honestly have no idea what to expect, which is exactly how I want things to be. I’ve always told people that I embrace the unknown, now it’s time for me to back that up.
